Story

Hey everyone

This year I am making a difference by participating in Bridge to Brisbane and running for a cause that is close to my heart and who are doing some amazing work.

Ten years ago, I was diagnosed with epilepsy and my whole life changed. I went from being a perfectly healthy 20 year old woman, to having a 3 minute long grand mal seizure on the morning of my sisters wedding. If it wasn’t for the quick thinking of my family, I don’t know what would’ve happened to me. A few months later, I was diagnosed with epilepsy and life has never been the same.

Now, I rely on family and friends for transportation, I take medication twice a day and I live with the side effects of that medication. My seizures have even resulted in me hurting myself to the point where I have lost teeth and broken my nose. I have had seizures in public where strangers have had to help me and I have woken up not knowing what’s just happened. Not only does epilepsy take a toll on my physical health but it takes a toll on my mental health.

Not a day goes by where I don’t think about my condition and the stigmas that are attached to it. I never know when my next seizure is about to occur and it can be terrifying. Living in this constant state of uncertainty is something a lot of people diagnosed with epilepsy deal with. This uncertainty also affects those close to someone living with epilepsy. This can trigger mental health issues such as anxiety, depression and anger outbursts, making it one of the most complicated numerological disorders to treat and manage.

There is currently no known cure for epilepsy and this is why I’m raising money to help find a cure.

You can support my efforts and help me reach my fundraising goal by making a secure online donation. I really appreciate every donation, big or small.

Together, with my friend Caitlin, I am aiming to run the 4.5km in under 33mins. If I reach this time goal, I will personally donate $200 to Epilepsy Queensland.

I am not much of a runner so this will be tough for me!

Donations made through this platform are secure and will be remitted directly through to Epilepsy Queensland.

Thank you so much for your support!

Epilepsy Queensland Inc

For more than 50 years, Epilepsy Queensland has been assisting Queensland families touched by epilepsy. Services include education, counselling, information services, children’s and family support programs, specialised training programs, support groups and advocacy. Epilepsy directly affects around 2% (1 in 50) of the population and still remains one of the most misunderstood conditions in today’s society. 28,740 children and adults in Queensland with active epilepsy which is more than muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s disease, motor neurone disease, and several others combined. Anyone can be diagnosed at any age and Epilepsy Queensland helps to replace the fear and uncertainty with knowledge and empowerment. 60 people per week receive an epilepsy diagnosis. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), it is doubtful there is any other medical condition so universally neglected due to a combination of social stigma, low profile and lack of resources. WHO recognises epilepsy as the world’s most common serious brain disorder. Please help us to be the beacon of hope for people living with, and impacted by epilepsy in Queensland.
